When Nerds Collide

By Mike | March 19, 2004

When Nerds Collide.

If you’re looking for some light reading during these heavy news days, check out the above article covering the battle between astronomer Philip Plait (www.badastronomy.com) and conspiracy theorist Richard Hoagland (enterprisemission.com). The former spends some of his time exposing bad science and debunking outlandish theories, and he’s basically turned his guns on the latter, who is rather vehement in his beliefs about life on Mars and NASA’s attempts to cover it up.

Check out their websites. It’s neat watching Hoagland throw out everything in an “OH MY GOD, LOOK AT THIS!” attitude, then surfing over to Plait’s place and have him neatly burst the bubble with a scientific pin. I’m mainly surprised Hoagland is still jumping up and down over the Cydonia crater (the famous “face on Mars”), which had been rephotographed at higher resolutions and debunked years ago. Jump in and browse around. Fun stuff. Lots of blurry pictures. Half the time you just want to shout “It’s just a fucking rock, you asshole!” while he’s going “Behold… the stove!”

Apparently Hoagland recently appeared on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory to plead his case. Yeah, smart move. Ever listen to the nuts that appear on that show? I’m still waiting for an earthquake a dude predicted a couple months ago. So far nada. Funniest thing about the show these days is Noory comes off as a complete and total sucker. Some dude was selling a time machine on the show once for Christ’s sake. Back when Art Bell was still on he tried to at least appear to approach things logically, even though the guest was completely full of shit. Was a lot of fun to listen to late at night.
