“Show me the way to go home.
I’m tired and I want to go to bed!”

Watched Jaws again tonight. Nothing else was on, and I was reading Michael Slade’s Bed of Nails at the same time. The Midget watched Jaws with me. The wife didn’t think it was necessarily wise, but he’s seen sharks on Finding Nemo and has a stuffed Bruce from said movie, so immediately recognized the great white for what it was. Any time it was on screen, he was say “Shark! There’s a shark!”

Then, when Roy Scheider finally blew it up, the Midget says “Shark’s gone!”

Oh yeah. Shark’s gone alright. Heheh.

Finished Bed of Nails, too. I intended to finish earlier and get some writing done, but it didn’t happen. I’m just glad I finally got through it, though, as I’ve been working on it for several weeks now. It’s got nothing to do with the quality of the book (which is high, by the way); mostly I’ve been burying myself in tech books and magazines for work, as well as trying to find some time to work on my own fictions.

It’s a good book, and I recommend it. I just wish the US edition’s cover had something to do with the novel. The Ripper, captured earlier by protagonist Zinc Chandler, is not necessarily the main antagonist. The Canadian cover, visible on the Slade site, is much better. The Tarot and the occult play a role in the novel, but the main theme, if one could call it that, is cannibalism. There’s a nice history lesson within the novel, too, about the Cook Islands. The history almost threatens to bog down the action in places, but Slade’s done a nice job of spreading it out so you’re not faced with it all at once at an inopportune moment. I look forward to going back and reading more of Slade’s work; I’ve already got Hangman in paperback and Death’s Door in hardcover.

Gonna take a quick break from horror, though. Cory Doctorow’s Eastern Standard Tribe arrived today and is a slim hardcover. I think I’ll tackle it next.
