About Sums it Up

William Gibson has a blog post that has an excellent quote from Jack Womack regarding the presidential election, and it sums up my own feelings on the election better than I probably could myself:

“We can see that the person now in office has led us into a terrible situation, and clearly has no idea what to do, and if reelected will continue to do more of the same. But his opponent has not given us a sufficiently exact plan of action indicating what he intends to do during the next four years — regardless of what events might take place in the meantime. Therefore, obviously, the right thing to do is to stick to the idiot we know, who will continue to do the same, but who at least has never been accused of suggesting that Americans committed atrocities in Vietnam.”

Quick Update: Based on some of the emails rolling in, I should add that primarily I agree with the sentiment of the quote, not every word. I can’t stand either candidate and believe they’re both full of shit. I could point to single issues, but depending on the given issue, I may lean toward Bush or I may lean toward Kerry.

My solution will probably never happen: get rid of the whole Goddamn party system. Half the time politicians just vote against bills or debate one another based on party lines rather than what they believe. They’re more worried about pleasing the party and securing their political aspirations rather than doing their job, and the party system encourages this behavior.
