Okay, the actual essay’s title is “Print on Demand, or Why Does This Book Cost So Much and Have Such a Bad Cover?” It’s written by Alan Beatts, the owner of Borderlands Books in San Francisco. Follow the link to the latest Borderlands newsletter and scroll down about halfway and you’ll find the essay. It’s an excellent summation of the problems with print on demand publishing. I even experienced a chunk of it firsthand with Deadliest of the Species.
