Poppin’ Pills

I’ve got this cocktail of pills I take every morning.

Fortunately it’s all voluntary at the moment: a multivitamin, chromium picolinate, and fish oil. When I feel like it, an extra vitamin C. A scoop of whey powder goes into milk or a smoothie every other day after exercise, with sometimes an extra day as breakfast when we let the cereal run out.

I’m getting that “I’m turning into a health nut” feeling again. Last night, I opted for cheese and crackers* over ice cream. Today, the wife sent me to Arby’s for lunch. Normally I’m all over the beef & cheddar sammich combo with curly fries**. Today, no fries. Did the cheese sticks, but this is probably the last time I’ll make that mistake, too; they don’t take ‘em out of the oil in time and they’re greasy. Also got the giant roast beef instead of the faux-cheese-slathered monstrosity (which I found out also comes in a bacon model these days).

I was happy to make that next step, but then looked at the ingredients on the horsey sauce, the bbq sauce, and the red sauce for the sticks: high fructose corn syrup in all of them. Ugh. Restricted myself to one packet for the sammich. I really need to find myself a barbecue sauce recipe so I can make my own. Or, if I was thinking, I should have busted out one of the flavored mustards I picked up recently (HCFS in only one of the four).

It’s funny, I never thought of myself as a health nut, even when I was in shape (ten years back…). Now I’m popping vitamins and reading labels. And, more importantly, I’ve stuck to the exercise routine: 3 days a week on the weight machine. I cleaned up the bike the other day, too; just need to make time to ride. Still haven’t busted through that ten-pounds-down mark, but I feel better and the belt’s a notch tighter.

In general terms, I’m still sticking to the Abs Diet (which, again, is more about eating the right foods and exercising than avoiding certain foods). I’m nearly through the book. My reading habits suck these days. Once I finish it, and get through an outing this weekend, it’ll be time to make a more concerted effort to follow the meal plan and see if I can’t amp up the metabolism a bit like it says.

So far, so good. Ever onward.

* Cracker Barrel extra sharp cheddar and rosemary & olive oil Triscuits. Mighty tasty.

** Regular size, with iced tea vs. pop. Have been doing that over a year now, and I don’t miss it. Time for the next phase.
