When I saw I was down to just a single, solitary Helix in the humidor, I was a little bummed. Not just because it was the last in the box, though. The Helix is essentially an inexpensive cigar that tastes inexpensive. As a certain cigar retailer described it to me, it’s a cheap smoke to take on the golf course or to hand out to folks who don’t normally smoke cigars. It’s got a simple, straightforward flavor and it smokes clean.
I had one some time ago, and as I recall those descriptions more or less held true.
Tonight was no different. It lit a little rough, and at first left a sort of murky taste on the roof of my mouth. When that cleared up I was left with a lackluster smoke taste that made me wonder why I was bothering. Sure, it had a smooth draw and had no problems staying lit or holding its ash in the steady, chill breeze blowing through the yard, but it just wasn’t doing anything for me.
Granted, it beat the stuff behind the counter at your average gas station, but it was far from a Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real.
Argh… I need to hit a smoke shop.
