Sweet Is Not a Flavor
By Mike | November 30, 2006
Jones Soda is ditching high-fructose corn syrup in their drinks! (Found via Boing Boing.) Way cool. I’m not a big fan of their oddball flavors, and I don’t recall trying their colas, but I may have to take a crack at their root beer under the new recipe.
It would be nice if the big companies would make similar moves, but as the article says, it’s probably not going to happen. There are just far too many people hooked on the current taste, and the companies have far too much branding and marketing involved to just make a switch. Chances are we’ll see a new flavor/formula if anything, so they can test the waters. Chances are the resulting product will not taste quite as sweet.
And in the case of root beer, that’s just fine with me. I almost never drink pop, but I still get a craving for root beer from time to time. And I’m not a big fan of the root beers from the big guys, Mug or Barq’s, as they’re just too sweet. The same goes for Dad’s and A&W (though the latter is at least creamy). I can dig Hires, but I mostly like the smaller brews like IBC and the off-brands or small brews you find at gas stations and corner stores. I also like most of the drinks that call themselves sarsaparilla, though that’s impossible to find in this part of the country.
“Sweet” may be a way of describing something, but it is not a flavor.

I still say Sprecher makes the best root beers.
