How to Install Fedora Core 6

HowtoForge is running a series of articles explaining in detail how to install Linux, starting with The Perfect Desktop – Part 1: Fedora Core 6. If you’ve ever wanted to take Linux for a test drive, are interested in dumping Windows on your PC, or have an old machine you want to experiment on, but didn’t know where to start, then look no further.

A couple quick notes:

First, you will need the CD images or the DVD image. You can download them right here. I recommend using a BitTorrent client if you’ve got one (and if not, go get Azureus).

Second, these instructions are apparently for installing to a new hard disk, or at least running Linux on this system solo. If you do not want to lose your Windows partition or data, you will need to watch for it in the early steps referring to drive partitioning.

Dual-booting Windows and Linux is a good way to get started, but if that’s the route you want to go you’ll either need to free up a partition on your current drive or install a second hard drive. The latter is the easiest way to go.
