Breathe, Dummy!

One would think breathing would be simple giving we’ve all done it all our lives, yet I have this bizarre (and bad) habit of holding my breath while exerting myself. I’ll suck in a deep lungful of air and run on that, letting out maybe a small fraction of it and drawing back in the same. That leaves me with very little fresh oxygen, and as a result I have the endurance of a tree sloth.

I’m not quite sure how to fix it beyond just plain breathing. I often remind myself when I kick up the pace walking to work, but on a short run or jogging up some stairs I’ll completely forget until I’m through it and realize I’ve done it again. I don’t remember if I used to do it in wrestling in high school, or if I used to do it when working a warehouse job. Is it something I’ve accidentally trained myself to do, or is it a subconscious thing I’ve had forever?

Either way, it needs to be fixed. If anyone’s got any suggestions, I’m all ears.
