Cape Comic Con

Signing My Life Away

It’s been a week, but this is the first chance I’ve had to upload the few pics I took from last week’s Cape Girardeau Comic Con and post my thoughts.

It was a small show, with the dealer’s room filling a gymnasium, but traffic was steady and the people there were actually interested in buying comics. I sold more comics there than I did at a show that shall remain nameless which attracted many, many times the audience CapeCon did. I left the con with a few more dollars in my pocket than I arrived with.

I spent the weekend with Cullen Bunn (The Damned), and we shared table space on Saturday with Chris Samnee and Brian Hurtt. Chris and Brian managed to sell a few sketches while Cullen and I pushed the books on folks.

Cullen and I also ran a panel on Saturday afternoon. The subject: Breaking Into Comics. It looked like it would be a small group at first, but once the organizer Ken Murphy made an announcement we had ourselves a good crowd. We ran about twenty minutes long because the next panelists weren’t ready yet, but it was fine because the questions kept on coming (and to our surprise, some people were even taking notes). Not bad at all for such a small con.

The other benefit of a small con is you have more time to talk to people. At a big con like Wizard World, you spend a few minutes talking comics with someone and then they’re gone. Here people would chat us up, then stick around and talk for a while. Thanks to Jarret, Joe, Laura, Jamie, and everyone else who stopped by to hang out, it made our weekend.

Saturday night I learned two things:

1) For a college town, Cape Girardeau is dead. We were in a huge billiard hall and there were maybe three tables active until about 10pm. Even then the place was only about half full.

2) Cullen sucks worse at pool than I do. I promised him I wouldn’t post the final tally, so let’s just say it was bad.

In all it was a good weekend and a great time to catch up with Cullen, Brian and Chris. I hope organizer Ken Murphy (owner of Marvels & Legends comic shop) holds this again next year, as I’ll be happy to go down there again.
