Okay, last Linux advocacy post for a while. I know I’ve mentioned it a lot lately, but the links just keep coming and a few of you have asked me for a little more info. Part of it is frustration with Windows and part of it is general curiosity.
Now I give you Dan Martin’s “Things I can do in Linux that I can’t do in Windows” blog entry.
Yes, hardcore Windows users will find quibbles and arguments in each statement. He knows this, I know this, deal with it. This isn’t for the hardcore Windows user, this is for people who just want to turn on their system and get some things done.
If you can learn Windows, you can learn Linux. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but in several years of working with Linux, I think Linux’s advantages far outweigh those of Windows and Linux’s disadvantages are far less irritating than those of Windows (at least as of recent distro releases).
And given the price of Linux and 99% of its software — zero dollars — those disadvantages are easy to swallow.
