@ Chomp:

"I have never experienced any of the problems with Kubuntu you have described. When you were attempting to install java did you scroll to the bottom of the agreement and tick the little box for accepting the license before clicking next? I’ve never had a problem installing packages under Kubuntu so I am guessing that was your problem. Adept works perfectly as well in my experience. (...)"

And I've had problems with adept few times. It seems to be unstable. Sometimes it lefts deb database locked, so It's just needed to delete .lock files. But currently, under Kubuntu 8.04 it failed once and I am not able to install any package through adept any more. And I am not a Linux newbie, I've been using Linux for 5 years...

Err.. It IS the same linux. It's just that it has different programs. Kde for example is a suite of programs. So.. same kernel, but .. well, Kubuntu with its suite of applications come with its share of bugs. Same goes to Ubuntu. Same linux.. hmm! It's like saying 'same windows', but one shipped with photoshop and the other with pain (ignore the fact that one is way better than the other, is just an example).

I find it very odd, then, that Ubuntu and Kubuntu would have such a distinctly different look and feel out of the box. Maybe it's more an indication of the different directions GNOME and KDE are taking.

"Kubuntu and Ubuntu are not meant to be seen as distinct projects; Kubuntu is part of the Ubuntu project, and they are both part of one development team that contributes to the whole. Kubuntu is Ubuntu with a different default setup, the Ubuntu CD contains only GNOME as a desktop environment; the Kubuntu CD contains only KDE, this is the primary difference."

Yep, I scrolled through the license agreements, but never saw an acceptance button. I suppose I could have missed it, but my patience for fiddling these days is very limited, which is why these are only cursory reviews and not in-depth studies.

I have no idea why it missed my Windows partition, either. If Kubuntu normally does that, it's odd that it skipped mine. It was found in the partition portion of the setup, but never presented for importing or anything else, and again, missing from GRUB. Sure, I could easily have tweaked it, but it's just odd that Ubuntu would find it and Kubuntu would not.

My understanding of Kubuntu (and Xubuntu for that matter) is while it's distributed by Canonical, it's more community-supported than Canonical-supported. I could be wrong, but I do find it odd that it would have such a different look and feel from the core Ubuntu version. Why would one have a solid, professional look and the other be chintzy? Also, I would think they would present it as a download on the core Ubuntu site and list it as supported if it were officially supported. Compete may not be the proper term, but it seems to me it's not an official Canonical product.

Additionally my grub menu has Kubuntu, safe mode, and Windows with no additional configuration on my part, so I am not sure what happened with you. Anyways, it is a trivial matter to add those to the grub menu. And lastly, Kubuntu does not compete with Canonical as Kubuntu is Canonical the same as Ubuntu is Canonical.
