Free Short Story: “Inazuma”

It’s been quite some time since I’ve offered up free fiction on the web, so I decided I’m about due. Presenting here, for the first time anywhere, the short story “Inazuma”. It’s a bit too long to post within the blog, so please use the following links to download your desired format:

“Inazuma” had been accepted for an anthology which recently fell victim to the downturn in the economy. Rather than wait out long response times in a struggling fiction market, I decided to offer it up here instead. It deserves an audience, and I’m curious to see what kind of response it will get. Please spread the word to your friends. I’d also greatly appreciate links directly to this post.

Additional electronic formats may come soon. I took this opportunity to tinker with the tools for ebook formatting, and I’m not happy with the way .mobi (Kindle) files turn out from Calibre conversion, particularly line wraps and hyphenation. If anyone has a better suggestion, please let me know.

Thank you for downloading my work. If you enjoyed it, please do check out The Pack: Winter Kill, available for the Kindle and in trade paperback from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

  3. Nice, can’t wait to download this and check it out. As for kindle formatting, check out smashwords and follow their style guide, it’s fairly basic and great for simple formatting, more advanced and specific guidelines can be found in the kindle forums.

  4. Calibre converts epub to mobi very well indeed because they are both based around html. It is only PDF that it struggles with, and it will struggle with converting that to any format. You really need to start with html as your input source, then you can convert to anything you want. Or failing that, RTF. But never use PDF as an input source because it always jumbles random lines up.

  5. I’ve just had a play with this an see what you mean about the hyphens. To make a mobi from the epub without it adding lots of extra hyphens do this:

Rename the epub to .zip and extract the chapter-1.xhtml file. Rename it to chapter-1.html.

Use Mobipocket creator to convert the html to prc.

  7. I read the story and it was delightfully creepy. I’m sorry the anthology fell through but thank you for sharing it with us. I stored it in my Nook because I intend to read it again and again.
