Random Updates

I see gas prices are up again, just as I prepare for road trip 2 this weekend. Outstanding.

On the plus side, I’ll be heading out to visit the inimitable Cullen Bunn to help him celebrate getting old. I’m sure many margaritas will be consumed. I may even finish his new Kindle novella, Blood Feud, on the way down. Rednecks and horror… what’s not to like? Oh, and the novella’s pretty good, too.

Whatever the party plans, it’s inevitable we’ll talk business at some point. We joke around, share ideas, and I generally leave recharged and excited about writing. I plan to ride that high through to the end of The Pack: Lie with the Dead. That book is long past the intended finish date, and I need to put it to bed so I can move on to Chimaera and final prep for the hardcover limited of Winter Kill.

Speaking of Winter Kill, thanks to everyone who put in their preorder reservations for the limited hardcover edition! I greatly appreciate the support. If you haven’t put your name on the Acquisition List, you can still email the publisher at WinterKillHC@evileyebooks.com and do so. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, click here.)

There are other things in the works, too. Nothing solid enough to talk about yet, but despite the family health issues and the day job craziness, I haven’t been totally useless on the writing front. I fired off a cold short story submission for the first time in ages, I’ve got two more shorts due at the beginning of next year, two more in a slush pile, and yet another sold and waiting on publication. Short stories don’t have a huge return on their time these days, but if they bring a few new readers my direction, I’m happy. I also have two webcomics I’ll just say are in development. The artists are working through their own projects, and I’m still doing background work on one of them, but I hope to have more info on both of them in the coming months.

Stay tuned, too, for upcoming news on Restore from Backup by J.F. Gonzalez and I. We’ve signed contracts for reprinting it in an anthology and have even been paid for it. I’ll wait until I have publishing details before sharing the rest, though. I’m honestly not certain what the release date is on the book.

Which brings me to my next reminder: The Pack: Winter Kill is $4.99 through holiday season, which is about half the original launch price. (Can we really say “cover price” for e-books?) We’ve sold quite a few at that price when it was first announced, but I’d love to have more. If you know anyone with a Kindle, send them my way!

If you still prefer paper, then check out The Pack: Winter Kill in trade paperback. Amazon stocks it below cover price at $11.65. You can also get the book ordered through Barnes & Noble, either from your local store or via the B&N online store.

So, even though I’m not getting as much done as I’d like, I at least feel busy. When there are signed contracts and actual commitments, it’s a lot easier to avoid feeling like I’m wasting my time. Sure, some people say you have to love it to do it, to write for the sake of the act itself. But the reality is there are far better ways to put food on the family table, and it’s a lot easier to justify my time writing when there’s a potential for return.

And with that I best get some rest. I’ve got karate in the morning, a long drive in the afternoon, and it’s a safe bet Cullen will be pouring margaritas into my gullet tomorrow evening.

We’ll try to stay out of the evening news, but no promises.

From the publisher’s announcement:

…The book will sport a dust jacket styled to recall the now seemingly ancient days of letterpress printing when color was applied one at a time by lead plates pressed against the paper as it was brought up to meet a giant ink disc by the platen.

The case binding will feature fine red cloth with silver foil stamping on the front cover and spine, with dark gray endsleeves, creme colored interior paper and a stitched-in cloth bookmark ribbon.

But perhaps most interesting to collectors, of course, will be the title page. It will be hand-numbered, embossed with a certification seal from Evileye Books, and include Mike Oliveri’s signature.

Nice, eh? One of the guys from Evileye has done manual typesetting and design in the past, so I had no doubts they’d be bringing out the big guns when it comes to quality. I think collectors will be very happy with this edition.

Remember, the only way to reserve a copy at this point is to contact Evileye via email at WinterKillHC@evileyebooks.com. There’s no payment required at this time.

There will be extra material, too, including an exclusive short story. Those extras will be announced once they’re finalized, but Evileye is going to make sure you get the most out of your investment. Also, if you’d like to get in on the ground floor of the Evileye limited collection, you may also want to check out the limited hardcover for Cullen Bunn’s Crooked Hills! Jump on over to the Evileye Books website for details.

Help Spread the Word

Evileye Books is now taking preorders for the limited edition hardcover edition of The Pack: Winter Kill, and I’m looking for folks to help spread the word. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell the guy down the street, because we’d like to get as many people on the Acquisition List as possible.

For those of you who visit message boards and forums, we’ve also put together a banner to use in signature lines:

The URL for the image is http://www.mikeoliveri.com/pics/media/wksigbanner.png, and if you could link it to http://www.mikeoliveri.com/the-pack/ I would greatly appreciate it.

If you’re interested in a copy yourself, send an email to WinterKillHC@evileyebooks.com and let them know. Final pricing will be announced in 2011, so there’s no payment required at this time.

We’ve already had several people join the list, and several more are already spreading the word. Huge thanks to you all, I greatly appreciate the support.
